David Robinson and Matt Jones recently collaborated to shoot MTB slopestyle in a completely new way.
Two-and-a-half years ago, when photographer David Robinson first saw the Octocopter drone (an eight-blade, camera-mounted microcopter) his imagination went into overdrive as he realised how it could help him achieve his mountain bike photography goals.

After a lot of planning, David joined slopestyle star Matt Jones
for a shoot at Leogang Bike Park, in Austria, to see if drones that can carry flashes really are the next big thing in MTB photography.

The equipment
Using the Octocopter paired with a studio-style Elinchrom ELB 400 flash system (chosen for its lightweight and compact nature), David was able to place the light wherever he wanted around the rider.

The final results
Shooting slopestyle with regular flashes is troublesome, as the distance from flash to rider is often too far – so David was motivated to get light into previously impossible places. Scroll through the pictures below to see the results of his work.
